Ecology, Dharma, & Natural Beauty
Ecology, Dharma, & Natural Beauty
Almvik is located in Järna, Södertälje municipality, some 50 km from Stockholm. The whole Järna area is unique in Sweden, full with projects and small villages focused on ecological and alternative lifestyles. In that area, Almvik is the only village that is dedicated to dharma and yoga spirituality. With a small population of 70+ inhabitants, Almvik presents an uncommon blend of beautiful natural environment and spiritual ideals. Surrounded by a lake and a forest, Almvik has a small beach, apple orchard, and playground for children. This makes it an ideal place for a yoga retreat.
Almvik is unique in Scandinavia in many ways. It has established the principles of serious yoga on the whole village area! All households share a commitment to spiritual cultivation, and the whole village is free from non-vegetarian food and intoxicants. It is a place where you can see how the world might look like, if everyone decided to become a spiritual practitioner. The central attraction in Almvik is the largest by area temple dedicated to Krishna in Scandinavia. Daily worship has been going on for decades, following the centuries old tradition of Gaudiya Vaishnavism, one of the major existing schools of Vedanta. The large temple-building contains a small ashram for full-time students, a large kitchen equipped to host festivals with hundreds of visitors, yoga room, and facilities for seminars.
It may be less exotic yet equally impressive, that all residents combine their spiritual ideals with an otherwise ordinary country life. More than half of the families live by private enterprise. A yoga school and art studio exist side by side with a bakery and a construction company. There is a large privately run greenhouse, and the village has recently established its own production for providing the temple with ecological and truly locally grown flowers, herbs and vegetables. Besides the meals provided by the retreat kitchen, you may have a chance of getting freshly baked cinnamon rolls from the local bakery, at the retreat café.
Meet Our Cows
Another rare feature you can encounter is a program to protect cows, financed by the residents. At the present moment, there are a dozen cows and bulls. If you meet them, they look just like any other cow you have seen, with one important difference: they need not fear for being sent to a slaughterhouse, ever. That has been the sacred policy in Almvik for 30+ years now.
The Spirit of Almvik
If you visit the village, you might not want to ever leave. During your stay, consider this. Almvik is dedicated to preserving the sacred atmosphere. Please visit the village with the intention of making a special investment to your own spiritual advancement. Consider minimising your social media time, spending time in nature and with fellow yogis in stead. Respect the village principles of avoiding non-vegetarian food and intoxications. In this way, you will add something to the spirit of Almvik, and it will continue to stay the spiritual oasis it has become.
Accommodation and Meals
Accommodation and three daily vegan meals are included in the retreat price. Almvik has a simple guesthouse, where you can live in rooms for 1-4 persons. Outdoor camping is possible, if you bring your own tent.
